A local community focus

Hongera Foundation Kenya offers people help in their own surroundings to enable them to build up a decent existence. It is done by creating the circumstances by which the people can see to their own development in the place where they live. One of the most fundamental forms of help is education. Good education is one of the means to get people in third world countries out of their position of dependence. It is about better education at ECD and primary schools, secondary and vocational schools.

Golden rule: No request, no project

It is important for the Hongera Foundation Kenya that the parents themselves take the initiative for improvement. It is their school and it is their children who go to school. The role of the foundation is that of a ‘helping hand’.

Project driven

◦ The approach of Hongera Foundation Kenya is project oriented: the projects have a clear beginning and end. No support is given for running and maintenance costs, because that is the responsibility of the government and parents. ◦ Hongera Foundation Kenya tries to find donors for actual projects, and not the other way round. This brings about a direct involvement between donor and project. In addition, donors are given specific information afterwards about how their donations were spent.

Relationship between the donor and the project

• A relationship that is supported by people and mutual relations, and not by figures and reports; There is a direct relationship between donor and receiver: giving becomes exchanging, dialogue, the heart of all help. • After a project, donors can be given information about how the money was spent in the projects they supported

Sustainability of the project’s achievements

• The help offered is often more effective because of the short lines; • It helps envisioning local initiatives and solutions; • Good follow up by personal visits; • A good understanding of the cultural context, which is essential for success; • When problems arise, there is a higher probability of keeping the projects going and completing them properly

Resource Accountability

• There are hardly any overhead expenses; • Direct control over the money spent; • Usually effective with regard to costs
